Livin' On a Prayer

If you are of a certain age. . . any time you're "half way there," you're definitely "livin' on a prayer." that's

just how it is. So, as I'm half way through my #100daydresschallenge, I'm thinking about things in halves. We like to talk about folks in relation to whether they are "the glass is half empty" or "the glass is half full" types as though the scope of human personality can be defined by this narrow dichotomy. (In the interests of full disclosure. . . I trend toward, "There is a glass. I hope what's in it is delicious or I'm dumping it out.") Some elements have a half-life in which their radioactiveness decreases by half over a certain amount of time (and then half again so on and so forth). If we say someone does or does not do a thing "by halves," we are either complementing or denigrating their effort outputs. Mary Poppins taught us that, "Well begun is half done" so we all know that we need to finish what we start. Couples like to--assuming they get on well--refer to the other person as their "better half" in order to reaffirm that said person means a lot to them and they value who they are. One of the jokes my "better half" likes to tell is this one:
Q: How far can you walk into the woods?
A: Half way. Then you are walking out.
Here are some other applications of the concept of "half"
Half time at an event
Half and Half for your coffee (do people even use it for anything else?)
Going "halvesies" on a date or other group outing
Solomon wanted to split a baby in half (I wonder if that was top to bottom or side to side?)
Folks shouldn't be going off half-cocked because that never ends well
Sometimes we have half a mind to take some sort of action
Wonder how the other half lives? Me too.
At any rate, the idea here is this: the seemingly ordinary can be diverse and interesting if one merely turns on their brain and thinks for a minute or two. This is what I've been working on with this #wooland dress challenge. I have this plain, black wool dress (THAT HAS POCKETS!!!) that I'm wearing every day. In order to not get bored or glum about wearing the same, ordinary dress I've had to think a little bit (not a lot, really) about how it can be slightly different each day to hold my interest. In that way, it's like the word "half": seemingly plain, dull, and unremarkable at first but. . . . . actually. . . . .pretty damn cool when all it's facets, possibilities, and potential are taken into account.
A bit like most people. . . if we're being honest.
